Lost Civilizations: 10 Societies that Vanished Without a Trace Review

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial. I applied to review the book, Lost Civilizations: 10 Societies that Vanished Without a Trace because I love ancient history and I really enjoy reading.

Do you love history, but don't want to sit down to a 500 page text book? This may be the book for you then. At 87 pages,  Lost Civilizations: 10 Societies that Vanished Without a Trace is short, but is packed with information about 10 lost civilizations. The author, Michael Rank, talks about the civilizations one by one and touches on theories from varied sources.

For me this was an interesting read. I wasn't even aware of half of the lost civilizations, so I did learn quite a few new things about ancient history. One of my main complaints is that while this seemed like a light read, it was definitely complex at times. I found myself pausing after each chapter, which are only about 8 pages, to take my brain out of overload.

When I first started reading, I found myself wishing that he would have a summary at the beginning of each chapter to explain what the civilization was, but after 4 chapters I became accustomed to how he was writing and it started to flow fluently for me. He would also began the chapters simply, but as it reached the end, the chapter became more complex, making it sometimes harder for me to follow.

The final thing I would improve upon would be the introduction. Introductions should be a summary of what's to come in the book itself. With this books intro there was too much talk on the Mayans, I actually thought it was a chapter on only them at first, until a bunch of other random civilization facts started getting dropped. When I reached the end of it, I felt it had been drawn out and that there were too many facts jammed into it, making it overwhelming.

I personally give this book a 3 out of 5 stars. It was an interesting read that was, short and to the point, while giving plenty of information and different points of views. If you are interested in history I would highly recommend this book.

Synopsis:
From the #1 bestselling author of History's Greatest Generals comes an exciting new book on the greatest societies in history that vanished without a trace, and why their disappearance still haunts us today.
Whether it is Plato's lost city of Atlantis, a technological advanced utopia that sank into the ocean "in a single day and night of misfortune"; the colony of Roanoke, whose early American settlers were swallowed up in the wild forest lands of the unexplored continent, or the Ancient American Explorers, who managed to arrive to the New World 2,000 years before Columbus, the disappearance of these societies is as cryptic as it is implausible.

This book will look at cultures of the 10 greatest lost civilizations in history. Some were millenia ahead their neighbors, such as the Indus Valley Civilization, which had better city planning in 3,000 B.C. than any European capital in the 18th century. Others left behind baffling mysteries, such as the Ancient Pueblo Peoples (formerly known as the Anasazi), whose cliff-dwelling houses were so inaccessible that every member of society would have to be an expert-level rock climber.

It will also at explanations as to how massive societies that lasted for centuries can disappear without a trace. Did the builders of the pyramids handy craftsmen whose method of transporting massive stones are still unexplainable simply disappear or were they part of an advanced alien race, as conspiracy theorists assert? Was the Kingdom of Aksum really the keeper of the Ark of the Covenant, and did this lead to their downfall?

Whatever the nature of their disappearance, these lost civilizations offer many lessons for us today -- even the greatest of societies can disappear, and that includes us.

Orajel for Cold Sores

I usually don't write reviews unless they are company sponsored, but I have decided to write this review because this product is a miracle.

I have suffered from cold sores since I was in middle school, I can still remember how I acquired this horrific virus. I blew a bubble and it stuck to my lips and I rubbed my skin raw trying to get it off, being from a generation that wasn't preaching about hand-washing, I obviously had the virus on my hands and voila, instant cold sores for the rest of my life :(

I have gotten one every year (they stopped for 2 years when I was pregnant and breastfeeding) either at the end or beginning of the year and man do they really suck. They are unsightly, usually painful, embarrassing, contagious, etc. One year in college I actually managed to give myself another cold sore. I had extremely chapped lips and didn't realize I had an incoming cold sore, so when I used chapstick I spread it to the other side of my mouth!

I've tried a few things to try to get rid of them alcohol or some inexpensive cold sore treatment, but the cold sores always went full blown, blister then open sore...big open sore. Last year I ran across a product that I decided I'd try since it was by a trusted brand, Orajel.

The product is called Orajel for Cold Sores, I don't remember what happened last year with it, but I remember that it worked, so when noticed 4 mini blisters start to form on the corner of my lip the other morning, I ransacked my medicine tote like my life depended on it.

What I was looking for was a small one treatment tube. All you have to do is squeeze the tube to break the little vial of medicine that gets soaked into the tip and then apply it to the site of the cold sore. Not only does it treat the cold sore, but it also numbs it before hand, so application is moderately painless. They recommend using the entire dose, but I'm pretty sure I'd have to rub it across my entire lower face to use it all.

The results, after only ONE treatment? The day of application, the blisters didn't grow, but were still there. The second day, the blisters were still there but didn't grow and were drying out. Today, the third day? Nothing, just dry skin, almost like the end stage of a healed scab.  You wouldn't even know that I had a cold sore just a few days ago.

Like I said this product is just a miracle for me. It works, it really truly does, I don't have to suffer from embarrassment of a full blown outbreak anymore. I can catch it in the blister stage, use this, and in just a few days be over it. No more suffering weeks with a hideous, embarrassing, painful sore. From now on this is my go to medicine for cold sore treatment and I will preach it to everyone I know because it works so well and fast.

The cost is a little high at around $15 for two single dose treatments, but I swear to you it's worth it, it's just so amazing and works so well. Think about it this way you can spend $5 on a cheap brand that's not really going to work, or works slowly or you can spend $15 and have it heal in just a few short days AND have a treatment for your next break out.

To reiterate, I LOVE this product, it works (and fast), I highly recommend it, and will be the only cold sore treatment I buy from now on. I really hope this review makes it to a few cold sore suffers because everyone deserves a fast effective treatment.

Free one month trial of Netflix

Get a FREE one month Trial of Netflix
when you sign up using the banner below.

Netflix

I LOVE Netflix, I started off with the free trial and once that was done, I made it a recurring subscription. We don't have cable because it's too expensive and it's hard to find shows I enjoy watching, so only paying $7.99 a MONTH for great movies and TV shows, is completely worth it.

My daughter also loves it because there are so many great kids shows, some I had never heard of before Netflix, and she can choose what she wants to watch herself (I have it set up on our Kindles).

The nice thing about Netflix is that you can watch it anytime, anywhere. If you own a smart phone or a tablet you can watch it from those, as well as at home from a Blu-Ray player, PS3, Computer, etc.

Afraid the shows you like are going to stop showing up because you'll have to share it? Don't worry you can make separate profiles for everyone! I have a profile for myself, husband, and daughter, since our tastes are so different.

For the final Netflix perk...you can watch it from two devices at the same time. My daughter can watch kid shows from hers and I can watch Family Guy...I mean documentary's from mine :)

Guylian Review and Giveaway

I'm  just going to put this out now...I am a chocoholic, so you can imagine my excitement when Guylian Belgian Chocolates gave me the go ahead (and samples) to write a review and host a giveaway for their chocolates.

Here's a little history about this company:
The Guylian brand dates back to the late 1950’s when Guy Foubert, a Belgian chocolatier married Liliane. Soon after, they joined their names creating Chocolaterie Guylian, where Guy made the signature hazelnut praline and Liliane created the shell designs. To this day, 55 years later, Guylian crafts the finest authentic Belgian Chocolate Truffles and utilizes the original recipe of Guy and Liliane. Their original signature truffle recipe is still made in small-batch copper kettles exclusively by Guylian’s Master Chocolatiers in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium.

I vaguely remember these chocolates from my childhood and knew they were good chocolates, so when a box showed up at the door and my husband asked who Michael Cobb (President of Guylian) was, I'm a little ashamed to say that I practically pushed him out of the way, took the box and ran, and may have also threatened him with the butter knife I was using to open the box, yet he still managed to get away with one of the boxes of chocolates!

Oh, yes, I said one, Guylian sent me a HUGE variety of their chocolates (see picture below, *insert Homer drooling sound*), I was in heaven.

But, alas, I'm sad to report that the chocolates didn't make it past a week, I actually think I acquired some kind of nutritional deficiency during that week because all I was doing was...ah..."testing" these yummy little morsels.

From all of my testing I have found that:
  • The Hazelnut Praline filled chocolates are my absolute favorite. The outside chocolate is very creamy, while the inside is thick and creamy like fudge, with the perfect amount of hazelnut flavor.
  • The Vanilla filled chocolates were much smoother, but didn't have as much flavor; the vanilla flavor was almost an after taste.
  • The No Sugar Added Chocolate Bar was smooth with a mild taste. It tasted like a cross between milk and dark chocolate.
  • The Extra Dark chocolate...um I really don't like dark chocolate, but I tried it anyway..uh-uh never again it was too much for me. The initial taste was nice, but the after taste was bitter and gave me a bit of a stomach ache.
I remember my grandmother having Guylian chocolates at her house once in a while when I was younger, and while I loved them, I never savored or appreciated them until now. You can taste the years of perfection with every bite and roll of the tongue. When I was eating them a scene from Matilda popped into my head, where the head mistress says, "Much too good for children" while shoveling chocolates into her mouth...I kind of agree, lol. I'm not saying don't give Guylian chocolates to kids, but these chocolates are definitely made to be savored and appreciated.

Guylian gets an A+ in my book, I would recommend these chocolates to anyone! They are fantastic and come in such a variety of packaging that you give them as gifts, whether as a thank you, get well, stocking stuffer, etc. These yummy little treats are now my favorite chocolate, I just wish they were sold in more stores, you can find a list of retailers here, I found a stash of them at my local Marshall's department store, or you can buy them online at their recently launched online store.

Interested in knowing more about Guylian? You can find them on:
Great news Guylian is allowing me to host a giveaway! One winner (1) will receive the following Guylian Artisanal Belgian Chocolate products, or similar:
  • One – 22 piece marbled chocolate seashell truffles

  • Four - 2 piece marbled chocolate seahorse truffles
  • One - No Sugar Added Milk Chocolate Bar

          Disney Movie Rewards

Bonus codes, 5 points each!  Codes expire April 6, 2015
          • Blossom
          • Spring
          • Candy
          • Bunnies
          • Goodies
Have you signed up for Disney Movie Rewards? What are you waiting for? It's a great reward program!

All you have to do is enter codes from Disney Movies, CD's, and ticket stubs on the Disney Movie Reward website, accumulate points, and redeem them for great rewards. Don't buy Disney movies or CD's? That's okay, Disney Rewards releases FREE codes every now and then, especially around holidays, your birthday, your anniversary, and every month in their newsletter.

After being a member for a couple of years now, I've come to learn that saving your codes can be a good thing because Disney Rewards often runs promotions. For example one of the most recent promotions was, when you entered a Magic Rewards Code from a Cinderella, Tangled, or Brave Blu-Ray starting in November until January (no longer available), you would not only get your points, but also a FREE movie ticket to the movie Frozen.

NOTE: Save the codes you have already entered: "The Disney Movie Rewards Magic Code can sometimes also be used to unlock other Disney offers and features including but not limited to DisneyFile Digital Copy and Disney Second Screen."

Please note your points CAN expire if you do not log into your account at least once within 210 days.

Another great perk of the Disney Movie Rewards program is that once you enter your Magic Codes, the website records which movie its from (Disc Registration), so if that movie ever becomes unusable, all you have to do is go here and request a new movie, DVD's are $6.95 and Blu-Rays are $8.95, and send in your old movie.

Hope this has helped some of you, good luck and start earning!

          Herbal Essence Naked Review

The product I was asked to review is the Herbal Essences Naked Hair Care 4 Piece Set, which is a Limited Edition Walmart Online Exclusive; the sets are on sale for $12.99, while supplies last. I ordered my Hair Care set on December 21st and received it the day after Christmas, so shipping is pretty fast on this item. The set includes:
          • Naked Volume Shampoo- Contains zero heavy residues, dyes and parabens
          • Naked Volume Conditioner- Contains zero heavy residues, dyes and parabens
          • Volumizing Soufflé- Weightlessly boosts hair for luscious volume
          • Dry Shampoo- Instantly absorbs excess oil

I have fine hair, which means my hair is extra flat and static during the winter, so this is actually a horrible time to write a review on a shampoo and conditioner. After using the Herbal Essences Naked shampoo and conditioner, there's no difference to my hair and I'll have the same results with any other shampoo I use. Just to give you an example on how horrendous my hair acts in the winter, below is a picture of my static hair three hours after taking a shower (using the Naked shampoo).

When it comes to the shampoo and conditioner, my results are inconclusive, I can't give it a good or a bad grade because my hair hates winter. The one thing I can say about it though, is that the shampoo smells FANTASTIC, it's a mixture of grapefruit and mint and I'm totally in love with it; the conditioner has the same scent, but it's more subdued.

The Volumizing Souffle was probably my favorite out of all the products. It's a very light weight mousse, with the same great grapefruit/mint scent. The souffle went in easy and didn't leave my hair looking greasy like some hair products have in the past, it actually helped reduce my static loving hair and plumped it up a little. My only complaint about it is that, it comes out of the bottle fast and in more quantity then I want; my hair is short, so a little goes a long way.

Finally, the dry shampoo. Once again, inconclusive. I have to shower everyday otherwise my hair gets a really greasy look to it and while the dry shampoo is made for that, after using it my hair got super static. The scent is the nice the grapefruit/mint smell, but with a hint of hair spray smell, it's not overwhelming though.

I wish I could write a better review on the Herbal Essence Naked Hair Care set, but Vermont winters kill my hair, I have to wear my hair up most of the time no matter what hair products I use because of it. This is one product that you're going to buy somewhat blindly and choose whether you like it or not, I just can't give you my two cents in this weather.

Great news because I agreed to write this review, I'm allowed to host a giveaway for a $50 Walmart gift card, so one lucky fan can buy the Herbal Essences Naked Hair Care Set for themselves (as well as whatever other goodies they want with the extra balance). To enter use the Rafflecopter form below before January 15th for your chance to win, Good luck! Open to US residents only.

a Rafflecopter giveaway I was asked to write a review on a Herbal Essences product in exchange for a gift card to buy the product, in no way did this effect my review. The Walmart gift card and information have been provided by Herbal Essences.
